Everything in the platform

The full list, for students, teachers, school admins, IT, publishers and resellers. Lines marked "Coming" are planned and not built yet.

A bookshelf that works like a bookshelf

Covers, page numbers from the printed book, and notes that stay with the student.

Student notes stay private. Not even teachers can read them.

Bookmark tabs on the page edge
A Sticky Note, moved with the keyboard

The shelf

  • A shelf of covers, each with its publisher and how far the student has read
  • Find a book by title, author or ISBN
  • A tab for each subject, and favourites marked with a heart
  • A greeting by name, which the school can switch off
  • Light or dark mode, saved to the student's account

Reading

  • Page numbers match the printed book, with roman numerals for the front pages. Type 348 and go to page 348.
  • One page, or two side by side like an open book
  • Zoom: fit page, fit width, 125%, 150% or 200%
  • The book opens at the last page read, on any device. Zoom and page view are kept for each book.
  • Contents list in a side panel
  • Arrow keys and Page Up and Page Down turn the pages
  • Read aloud with the device's own voice, for the page or for the selected words. The words are not sent to a server.
  • Microsoft Immersive Reader, where the school turns it on
  • Coming: search inside a book, offline reading, and swipe to turn the page on a tablet

Notes and marks

  • Select words and a small menu opens: 5 colours, Highlight, Underline, Copy and Read aloud
  • A mark always grows to whole words, and works on both pages of the two-page view
  • Add a note to any mark, and give the mark a name
  • A web link in a note shows as a card. A YouTube link plays in the Notes panel.
  • Sticky Notes anywhere on a page: 5 colours, 3 fonts, 3 sizes, plain, lined or dotted paper, and tape, a pin or a clip. Move one, resize it, or hide its text, with the mouse or the keyboard.
  • Bookmarks: one press on the ribbon button. Coloured tabs on the page edge show each bookmark's page number.
  • The Notes panel shows a book's notes by page, filtered by type or colour
  • My Notes: every note from every book, one box per book. It prints cleanly for revision, and notes stay after the licence ends.
  • Copy a short quote, up to 100 characters at a time, where the school allows students to copy
  • Every delete asks a second time

Teachers get the book the day the school buys it

No waiting for the first student to be enrolled.

  • A free copy of every book the school buys, where the publisher gives teacher copies. School admins get it too.
  • Share a note with other teachers, or with teachers and students, across the school. Students see it under "From your teachers".
  • Copy a link that opens the book at an exact page
  • Share a page to Google Classroom, at a school that signs in with Google
  • Add a book page to an LMS course: pick a book from your shelf and a page, name the activity, and it opens that page for students. Tested with Moodle.
  • My classes: for each student, the page they have reached in each book, and when they last read
  • Page proofs: look at a sample of a new book before it is published, to help choose next year's texts. Students never see them.
A book page, added to a course

Progress, not a page-by-page trail.

One console to run your school's books

People, licences and reports in one place, at your school's own address, with every change on record.

Licences and books

  • A Licences page that opens on a dashboard: one card per order, showing licences given to students, held by staff and free, and the days left
  • Every book the school holds: licences bought, given out and available, the term, and the book's status
  • Give licences to many people at once, or take one back and give it to someone else
  • Coming: give licences to a whole class or year level in one step
  • Reports: one row per order, with licences given out, readers and pages

People

  • Import students from a CSV file. Students missing from the file are made inactive. An import that would change more than 10% of the list waits for a person to check it.
  • Search people by name or email. Filter by role, year level and status. See last sign-in and last read.
  • Edit a person's name, role or year level
  • Suspend a person without losing their licence
  • Delete with a 90-day safety net: a deleted person goes to an archive and can be brought back. After 90 days their personal data is wiped.
  • Classes with a name, code, subject and year level, and their teachers and students
  • Coming: sync students straight from your student information system

Sign-in and your LMS

  • Sign in with Google or Microsoft, whichever accounts the school already has. No new password.
  • Sign in from your LMS with LTI 1.3. Tested with Moodle.
  • A student or teacher on your school's email domain is added on their first click from the LMS
  • The console shows the addresses to paste into your LMS, and records every change
  • Only people the school has listed can sign in

Control

  • Security: live reading sessions with a risk level, and a button to stop one at once
  • Every note a teacher shared with the school, with a button to make one private
  • A record of changes to the school's details, with who made them and when
  • Your logo and your colour on your school's pages, with a live preview
  • The bookshelf and the console at the same address
  • Coming: export your school's data on request

Your school, at its own address

Students, teachers and admins go to yourschool.worldwideebooks.education and see your badge before they sign in.

  • A web address for each school. The admin console is at /admin on the same address.
  • The sign-in page and the bookshelf show your school's logo and colour
  • Your colour is checked for contrast before it is saved. A colour that is too pale is refused, with the reason.
  • Switch the greeting on or off, and choose a tinted or plain bookshelf
  • A mistyped address says there is no school there. It never lists or guesses other schools.

Licences that follow how schools buy

Named licences, school years, and clear rules for when a student leaves.

  • One licence, one person, one book
  • Choose per-student licences or book hire for each order
  • Terms of 12, 24, 36, 48 or 60 months, set by the publisher for each book
  • School years with their own dates and a cut-off date. Next year is made automatically.
  • A per-student licence goes back to the school if the student leaves before the cut-off, and stays theirs after it. A book hire licence always comes back.
  • A student who returns picks up their licence again. Suspending a student never costs a licence.
  • Order a book before it is published. Its licences open on the day it is published.
  • When a book reaches end of life, licences already bought keep working to their own end date, and the console names the book that replaces it
  • Coming: families buy their own licence from a school book list

Per-student licences. A book hire licence always comes back to the school.

The PDF never reaches the browser

Students see pages. They never get the file.

The book's PDF stays on our server. Only page pictures cross to the student's browser, a few at a time, each with a code that traces it to a reading session. The PDF never crosses. Our serverPDFThe file stays hereStudent's browserPictures of pages only4F7QX2M9KDA4F7QX2M9KDA4F7QX2M9KDA
  • Pages are turned into images on our servers. The source PDF stays there.
  • Every page image carries a short code that traces it back to a reading session. The code holds no name, school or time.
  • Pages arrive a few at a time, through short sessions that expire
  • Limits on how many pages one session can open
  • Unusual reading, such as pages turned too fast to read, raises a session's risk level
  • A response ladder: log, then suspend, then revoke. Coming: slow down, and ask to sign in again.
  • Printing shows a short notice, not the page
  • The usual copy keys do nothing on the book. The Copy button takes at most 100 characters, and each person has a daily limit.
  • Each school's data is kept apart inside the database itself, not only in the app
  • A person at World Wide eBooks checks every book before it is published
  • Coming: offline copies stored encrypted on the device, never as the PDF
  • A written evidence report: 9 security criteria, each measured. Available to publishers on request.

Built for every student, and careful with their data

No IP addresses. Ever.

Accessibility

  • Designed to WCAG 2.2 AA
  • A text layer under every page, in reading order, so screen readers read words, not pictures
  • Read aloud for a page or for selected words, and Immersive Reader where the school has it
  • Keyboard use everywhere, including Sticky Notes
  • A screen reader hears results, such as a copy that worked or a note that moved
  • A chosen item never shows by colour alone
  • Colour contrast measured by automated tests

Privacy

  • No IP addresses stored
  • Every sign-in ends by itself after ten hours. Signing out ends that sign-in only. No device names are stored.
  • Notes are private to the student
  • Teachers see progress, not each page a student opened
  • Publishers see licences bought by each school. They see no student names and no reading data.
  • After the 90-day archive, a person's notes, reading data, name and email are wiped
  • Immersive Reader is off unless the school turns it on. When it is on, the words on screen go to Microsoft to be read.
  • Student data is stored in Sydney, Australia
  • Reading data is never used for advertising, and student data is never sold
  • Coming: data kept in a region each school chooses

Your pages, protected and traceable

Your own portal to run your books. We check every book before it goes live.

  • Your own portal at your own address. Sign in with Google or Microsoft.
  • Add a book, upload its cover and PDF, and look at the pages as students will see them
  • Page numbers read from the printed pages, including roman numerals. Unnumbered pages are labelled from the last printed number, never invented.
  • Set the licence term for each book. A preview shows what a change does to existing orders.
  • Teacher copies complimentary or paid, book by book
  • Set an end-of-life date and name the book that replaces it
  • Upload a page proof of a new book for teachers to sample
  • Usage: licences bought, by school and by book, with the order date. Never student names.
  • Your details and logo. The logo shows on your own sign-in page and portal.
  • Update a live book with a new PDF or cover. Our staff are told at once.
  • A leaked page traces back to a reading session

Sell to schools in your region

  • See the schools you sold to, read-only
  • See the licences you sold and their prices. No other reseller sees them.
